What is Functional Training? Well simply put, it’s Training For Life, giving you the skills you need to enjoy every day activities as well as the sports and challenges you love while minimizing injuries and apprehension. At Little Fish, we focus on three important paths to wellness.
– Agility, coordination and yes, strength training first require mobile joints and muscles. If your soft tissue is not letting your bones move through space then chances are the simplest action, like reaching behind you for your seatbelt, can create strain and injury. We all have imbalances – top to bottom, right to left, front to back – but with proper stretching, both dynamic and static, the body can move with more fluidity and mindfulness. And yes, chronic conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and neuropathy as well as back, neck and shoulder pain can readily be addressed.
– Think of your arms and legs as spokes of a wheel. In order to move, to push and pull effectively, you must have a “center that holds.” Your core includes any and all muscles that attach to the pelvis, including glutes and many leg and spine muscles, not just the deep belly fibers. When your core is strong and balanced, you are, too! Whether standing on one foot or two, twisting, turning, bending over or reaching above your head. A stable core gives you an advantage in sports and keeps your back and shoulders safe in daily life.
– Not sure traditional gyms have the right idea. You know, where one machine focuses on your chest, another on your front thigh, another on your bicep. The body never moves in isolation so training them in isolation makes for greater imbalances and a lack of coordinated movement. Sure, using resistance is important, but at Little Fish we focus on complex moves that require multi-joint, multi-plane applications. And the only machine holding you steady are the strong cross-fibers of your entire core, front to back. Remember, your cardio-respiratory system needs to stay strong as well, so bringing limited stressful stimulus into your workout can help stave off diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
